PROTECTION
The following items are essential to protect penguin habitat and critical vegetation during construction. All restricted areas must be adhered to and no impact during construction by pedestrian movements, material laydown, placement of tools or extension cords etc will be tolerated.
· Establish site fencing to protect vegetation and penguin habitat surrounding the works area using DBCA approved site fencing – _standard steel and wire infill mesh fencing of weighted footings.
· Site fencing to have a minimum 200mm gap underneath to allow free penguin movement.
· Ground and vegetation disturbance outside of the extent of works will not be tolerated.
· Construction material laydown to be determined onsite with DBCA.
· Establish tree protection zones (TPZ) through site demarcation – _using DBCA approved site fencing.
· Note root protection zones (RPZ) for any ground disturbance works in construction of the deck and visitor infrastructure.
· Protect existing services including power supplies, water supply lines, taps, lawn reticulation and fire hydrant.
· No flagging bunting of soft sheet fencing where wind causes movement shall be used.
DEMOLITION
The following items are to be removed from the island:
· Post and rail fence adjacent to the lawn areas (approx. 55m).
· Picnic table brick plinths (10 of) and any subbase material (remove back to mineral earth).
· Signposts and concrete footings (2 of).
· Limestone path including all limestone subbase material (remove back to mineral earth) (approx. 15m3).
· Removal of grass and soil behind seawall in preparation for construction of new deck (approx. 100m3).
· Tree removal (4 of) – _retain on site vegetated branches at 1.5m lengths, remove large branches and stumps.
· Steps and ramps to boardwalk near toilet (3 of).
· Existing timber on the sea wall including:
o Deck apron and kick kerb along top of seawall.
o Timber handrail on balustrade.
o Stair treads to beach access steps.
o Fascia and whaler boards to ocean side of seawall.
· Partial demolition of the jetty boardwalk (access from jetty) in preparation for extension as part of works – keep composite decking for reuse.
· Partial demolition to boardwalk to south-east boardwalks in preparation for connection to new deck – keep composite decking for reuse.
· Demolition of existing boardwalk east of toilet (PART A on drawings) in preparation for connection to new deck – keep composite decking for reuse.
· Partial demotion of existing boardwalk west of toilet (PART B on drawings) in preparation for adjust heights to suit new deck – _keep composite decking for reuse.
The following items are to be removed and stored at the workshop on the island, 100m to the west of the construction site.
· Picnic tables (10 of).
· Signs (2 of) to be unbolted from post and stored.
· Composite decking boards to be stacked and stored for reuse.
· Brushing to be stored for revegetation works (by DBCA) post construction.
CONSTRUCTION
The following elements will be constructed post demolition.
Composite deck
· Construct composite deck as per drawings – _noting PART A and PART B construction requirements.
· Total area approx. 220m2
· Tie in new deck to existing boardwalks with neat edges and flush levels.
· Typical H5 treated bitumen painted pine posts and H4 structural pine sub-structure.
· Surefoot ground anchors may be used in specific locations where posts are not suitable such as near root protection zones (RPZ). Number and location to be approved onsite with DBCA.
Jetty boardwalk
· Construct a composite jetty boardwalk link between the existing entry boardwalk and the new Accoya deck.
· Realign a small section of the existing boardwalk past the operations base and square up to the new boardwalk.
· Note: existing engineered drawings to be provided to contractor.
· Total area approx. 35m2
Accoya deck
· Construct Accoya deck as per drawings.
· Total area approx. 450m2
· Tie in deck to adjacent composite decks with neat edges and flush levels.
· Typical H5 treated bitumen painted pine posts and H4 structural pine sub-structure.

· DBCA has pre-purchased Accoya for the Accoya deck. The timber purchased is per the schedule below. Any additional Accoya shall be purchased by the contractor.
Replace timber to seawall
· Replace the timber handrail, step treads, stair handrail, fascia and whaler boards associated with the sea wall with Accoya.
· DBCA has pre-purchased Accoya for the replacement of materials for the seawall handrail, step treads, stair handrail, fascia and whaler boards. The timber purchased is per the schedule below. Any additional Accoya shall be purchased by the contractor.
Re-establish turf and reticulation
· Reinstate levels and disturbance created from the removal of the limestone track and any demolition and construction works.
· Spread approved weed free turf top dress and level all uneven or disturbed areas created as a result of works.
· Test and repair reticulation impacted from works.
